Two weeks after knee replacement surgery

July 11, 2006
30 years ago, Gary tore up his right knee. In the past couple of years, it became obvious it had worn out, and was really slowing him down. He got it replaced on June 28, and is working on physical therapy. Meredith has been working hard taking care of him and keeping the household in order.

Bringing in the Year of The Dog
Saturday, January 28, 2006, 08:26 PM

Gathering a crowd on Central Avenue

January 28, 2006
At Dim Sum, a Chinese restaurant on Central Avenue in Charlotte, the eve of the Chinese New Year is celebrated each year with fireworks, feasting and a special Lion Dance. This year, 4073 on the Chinese calendar, is the Year of The Dog.

According to kung fu master Rick Panico, whose students animated the lions, the dance brings prosperity to businesses in the New Year. The lions chase away evil spirits and bring good luck so people spend a lot of money in the business.

Celebrating the Day of Sacrifice
Wednesday, January 11, 2006, 11:32 AM

'Eid Al-Adha prayers

January 10, 2006
While pilgrims in Mecca cast stones at pillars symbolizing Satan, Muslims in Charlotte celebrated the day of 'Eid Al-Adha, the day of sacrifice, and a festival day for those who do not perform Hajj, the journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. To begin the special day, about 3,000 of the followers of Mohammed gathered Tuesday morning at the Charlotte Merchandise Mart for special prayer service. Today, fasting is prohibited, and a celebration glorifying Allah are the rule of the day. Children are traditionally given treats and balloons, to remind them this is a special day for Muslims.
